What're you eating? Part 1

If you’re anything like me, you’re not great at keeping track of everything in your life - things slip through. Living on my own, I’ve been splitting my mental energy between work, friends & family, and recreation (ground-breaking realisation, I know) but I’ve just realised that I’ve been neglecting the thing that strings it all together - food!

I’ve noticed a couple of things:

  1. I don’t have the energy/time to organise my meals properly

  2. I’m weak-willed when it comes to eating out (lunch & dinner)

  3. A lot of food is expiring in my fridge/cupboard & being left in the freezer for too long

  4. I’m gaining weight

  5. I need to cut down my spending

This isn’t a health blog, or a food blog - it’s a technical one, I swear! I decided that I was building bad habits but had the ability to make tools to make some positive change in my life.

So, here’s my rough idea for revolutionising my relationship with food:

  1. Create a local database of recipes

  2. Create a local database of my food

  3. Create an app for easily adjusting/updating these

The end goal? I want everything fully digitalised & available on my home network. I want to be able to go to the supermarket and know that I do/don’t need to buy something. I want to be able to be notified that food’s expired (and hopefully a recipe suggestion that can save the day before this occurs). I want to be able to plan my meals properly in advance so I can defrost chicken instead of buying a new pack. I want it all!

I’ve got a rough plan for how to start tackling this project but I’m also no software/web/DB/backend/frontend developer so I’m very keen to see where this project takes me and what I haven’t thought about yet!

Thanks for reading and starting this journey with me!
